Instagram's 24-hour DM rule, explained in plain language

MynaDM team ·

If you've ever wondered why a DM tool "couldn't" message someone, this is almost always the answer: Instagram only lets businesses send a standard DM within 24 hours of that person's last interaction. It's not your tool being difficult — it's the platform rule every legitimate tool lives inside.

What the rule actually says

When someone messages your account, replies to your story, or otherwise opens a conversation with you, a 24-hour window opens. Inside that window, tools using Instagram's official API can send messages on your behalf. When the window closes, they can't — full stop.

Comments work slightly differently, and this is the part that makes comment-to-DM automation possible: a comment on your post lets you send that person one private reply, within 7 days of the comment. That private reply is the DM your automation sends. If the person answers it, a fresh 24-hour conversation window opens.

What resets the clock

  • They send you a DM → 24 hours from that message
  • They reply to your story → 24 hours
  • They comment on a post → one private reply allowed, within 7 days
  • They tap a button in one of your DMs → 24 hours

What does not reset the clock: them following you, liking a post, or watching a reel. Attention isn't an interaction — a message or comment is.

Why serious tools enforce this instead of fighting it

Tools that promise to "DM anyone, anytime" can only do that by automating a logged-in account like a bot — the thing that actually gets accounts restricted. Tools on the official API physically cannot break the window, and that's a feature (worried about your wording instead? Run it through the free ban-risk checker): it means every message your automation sends is one Instagram has already agreed to deliver.

MynaDM checks the window before every single send — DMs, follow-ups, everything. If a follow-up would land outside the window, it doesn't send, and you can see why in your delivery log. Boring, predictable, and safe is exactly how automation should feel.

The practical takeaway

Design your funnel around interactions, not around lists. Ask for the comment ("Comment LINK and I'll send it" — the CTA generator writes these for you), deliver the value in the private reply, and let genuine conversation reopen the window naturally. That's the whole trick — and it's the compliant version.
